Bear markets: Wall Street's worst

The great Wall Street Crash, exactly 75 years ago, remains the nastiest and most prolonged slump in market history.

BBC News presents a guide to the worst-ever bear markets.

1901-03
  • Fall in the Dow: 46%
  • Losses recovered by: July 1905
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was only five years old when it fell into its first really severe bear market.

The 1901-03 decline was rare in being one of only three bouts of gloom lasting more than two years - the others were 1939-42 and the great crash of 1929-32.
This despondency was caused by a host of nasty incidents, most notably the assassination of President William McKinley in September 1901; later in the year, a particularly severe drought caused genuine alarm about US food supplies.
Although the markets recovered relatively quickly after 1903, the 20 years after 1901 were among the gloomiest in stock market history. US shares returned a total yield for the period of less than zero, giving the lie to the often-heard pronouncement that long-term stock market returns are always healthy.

  • Fall in the Dow: 49%
  • Losses recovered by: September 1916
The US economy took a nasty turn in 1906, largely because President Theodore Roosevelt threatened to clamp down on the monopolies that dominated many business sectors. Railway promoters, in particular, panicked.

Combined with the demands of having financed the Boer and Russo-Japanese wars, Mr Roosevelt's antitrust drive left Wall Street banks in poor shape.
By mid-1907, a mood of gloom was turning into full-fledged financial turmoil.
In the absence of any sort of formal stock market regulation, John Pierpoint Morgan, the greatest tycoon of the age, formed an alliance with the government to stabilise the financial system; two large banks, and even the New York Stock Exchange itself, were bailed out.

  • Fall in the Dow: 47%
  • Losses recovered by: November 1924
The crash of 1919 was the bursting of the first big tech bubble.
Just as the bears pounced when internet shares looked overvalued in 2000, so fears over the viability of the automobile haunted 1919. By then, car ownership was approaching what many commentators said was a natural saturation point: up to 50% in some markets.

The reaction was a severe shake-out in the car sector, as well as among other "new economy" companies. Unemployment surged, combining with increasing unrest - even terrorism - among fast-growing immigrant communities.
The market gloom only lifted when it became clear that cars could create new economic opportunities by stimulating road-building, tyre-manufacturing, metal-bashing and so on - activity that could fund a general increase in wealth.

  • Fall in the Dow: 89%
  • Losses recovered by: November 1954
This was the big one: the deepest and longest crash in stock market history.
Although it had some terrible moments, the great Wall Street crash did not, however, have the worst day's trading in history: far worse were 12 December, 1914 - when the Dow lost 24% of its value - and 19 October, 1987 - a 22% loss.

Most notable, however, is the sheer length of time - 22 years - taken to recover the losses after September 1929. The recovery was so long, in fact, that it contained two other highly unpleasant bear markets and recoveries.

1937-38
  • Fall in the Dow: 49%
  • Losses recovered by: December 1945
After the bubbles and turmoil of previous bear markets, 1937-38 seems rather dull.
Its cause was a plain old-fashioned recession, an after-shock of the more severe slump endured by the US and Europe at the beginning of the 1930s.

Governments in Europe accentuated the gloom by raising taxes to spend on re-arming, while the US Government poured extra money into its New Deal, a programme intended to stimulate the economy and raise employment.
Disillusionment among the business community was by then so strong, however, that the New Deal was abandoned soon after.

1939-42
  • Fall in the Dow: 40%
  • Losses recovered by: January 1945
Since this crash began in 1939 and was healed by 1945, it's not hard to guess its cause.
Although Wall Street could observe World War I with equanimity in 1915, it could not be so relaxed in 1939: American interests in Europe were far too deep for that.

During the war, the Dow closely followed the fortunes of the allied forces, rallying in late 1940 as Britain fought off invasion.
And unlike in 1917, there was no market mayhem when the US entered the war, something that had been factored in by investors almost from the start.

1973-74
  • Fall in the Dow: 45%
  • Losses recovered by: December 1982
The 1973-74 bear market - the only truly severe slide after World War II - came after a prolonged bout of optimism.
In 1972, after Richard Nixon's re-election, the Dow had exceeded 1,000 points for the first time ever.

The reverse came among a veritable landslide of bad news, including the Watergate scandal, an Arab-Israeli war and most particularly an oil embargo that sent fuel prices through the roof.
High oil prices produced a recession, ensuring that the gloom persisted well beyond the political factors that sparked the market collapse; even Mr Nixon's resignation in August 1974 did nothing to cheer investors.

Murthy passes the Infosys baton to KV Kamath

Banglaore: Signifying the end of an era, Infosys on Saturday decided to appoint KV Kamath as the successor to its current Chairman NR Narayana Murthy. Thirty years from its inception, founder and chief mentor Murthy will step down as Chairman of the Board in August 2011 to give way to Kamath, the current non-executive Chairman of ICICI Bank.
Kamath has been an independent director on the Infosys board since May 2009. It has also been decided that SD Sibulal will be new CEO and MD and S Gopalakrishnan (Kris) will be Executive Co-Chairman of Infosys, while Narayana Murthy will continue as Chairman Emeritus.Apart from Kamath, the other contender for the post of Chairman of the Board was Kris Gopalakrishnan, the current CEO of Infosys, who is both a co-founder and the man responsible for making Infosys one of the top three IT firms in the country. Kris has been elevated as the executive co-chairman.
Sixty three-year-old KV Kamath, a mechanical engineer and an alumni of IIM Ahmedabad, is an independent board member but not an Infosys insider.
Kamath started his career in 1971 at ICICI, an Indian financial institution that founded ICICI Bank. He is also credited for spearheading the expansion of ICICI Bank after privatisation and converting it into India's second largest bank. Kamath retired as MD and CEO of the ICICI Bank in April 2009.
Kamath was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2008. He was also the President of the CII for the year 2008-09.
A walk down the Infosys memory lane
NR Narayan Murthy has every reason to smile as the company he co-founded in 1981 with 6 other middle class mavericks has come a long way. Started in a 10x 10 room with Rs 10,000 this IT behemoth is credited with creating 1000's of millionaires courtesy its stock option schemes. Old timers says Murthy's greatness is his humility.
KV Kamath, Non Exec Chairman, ICICI Bank, said "There was a security guard at the door who opened the door for Murthy. And what Murthy asked him is still in my mind today. He says in Kannada 'utay tho' that is have you had dinner?"
Not just his humility, Murthy's dogged pursuit of good governance standards, has been appreciated and imbibed by many in corporate India.
KM Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group said, "The kind of governance that he stood for. The fact that he's speared the team, he has also stepped down and let the team take over and take the company forward which in itself a very big thing to do."
Those leadership skills are something which his professor, who knew him as a student, says he saw in a young Murthy many years ago.
"I think it's the team building capability and the understanding that he showed right at the beginning of Infosys about having to identify values that they were going to maintain," said J Krishna Iyer, NR Narayan Murthy's professor.
Murthy is stepping down at when the company is seeing a lot of flux, at a time when Mohandas Pai has quit, Nandan is not around and peers are outperforming. But is his employees are not complaining.
Ambitabh Chaudhry, Former CEO, Infosys BPO, said, "No I don't think it is very crowded at the top. Everyone at Infosys has understandably and arguably been there for a couple of years but some of that could change."
However the best tribute to NR Narayan Murthy is given from fellow founder Nandan Nilekani. According to Nilekani, Murthy's name will be right at the top when India's corporate history will be written.
"When the history of Corporate India is written Murthy's name will be right up there," said Nandan Nilekani, former Co-founder, Infosys.
Indicative perhaps of how hard it will be for him to step away from Infosys, Murthy could continue as Chairman emeritus at the company for another couple of years.

KV Kamath appointed chairman of Infosys Technologies

BANGALORE: Infosys Technologies, India's second largest software company, on Saturday named veteran banker and seasoned business transformation manger K V Kamath as its new chairman. Kamath, 63, who is currently a member of Infosys' board of directors, will succeed the company's founder N R Narayana Murthy on August 21.

The nominations committee of the company, which is facing one of the toughest times in its three-decades of existence, also named current chief operating officer S D Shibulal as CEO and MD, while the incumbent CEO, S Gopalakrishnan, was elevated to the post of executive co-chairman. Murthy, who turns 65 in August, will become the chairman emeritus, a non-executive position like Kamath's.

Murthy, along with six fellow software engineers, established Infosys with about $250 in 1981. In the last 30 years, they have made it one of the most respected names in the software outsourcing sector with an annual turnover of about $6.2 billion.

Kamath, the chairman-elect, is also the non-executive chairman of ICICI Bank, and is a renowned name in the corporate world. TOI had earlier reported that Kamath was likely to be named Infosys chairman.

Pleased with his elevation to the top post at Infosys board, Kamath said he felt greatly honoured and added that he would accept this responsibility with a deep sense of humility.

The management changes come after the company missed earnings estimates for the third time in four quarters, unusual for a company known for promising less and achieving more. In its April 15 press conference, the infotech giant also forecast the lowest profit margin since 2003.

With the Nasdaq-listed company facing stiff competition from domestic as well as multinational rivals, its share price has fallen about 15.6% this year. According to analysts, the new structure that the board is putting in place is expected to help it in its next wave of growth, and help reverse the stock price's southward slide.

At the post-announcement conference, Shibulal said the company was planning to build a next generation global services and consulting firm and would focus on strengthening client relationships. Hailing Shibulal, Murthy said the two were known to each other from pre-Infosys days, and as COO of the company he always exceeded the expectations of the board. Every member of the board that I have talked to, every independent member, has nothing but tremendous appreciation for Shibulal's contribution. I am so happy that he will be steering the company in the future, Murthy said.

On Saturday evening, the company also announced that it would drop the word 'Technologies' from its name and will be renamed Infosys Limited. As we are a broad ranged service provider, we have decided to rename the company, subject to all clearances. It is also part of our broad Infosys 3.0 vision, said CEO S Gopalakrishnan.

Head of the nominations committee, Jeff Sean Lehman, who worked with the Infosys board to finalize the new management structure, said the changes reflected continuity. While Kamath brings in a wide range of industry experience as well as expertise in corporate governance, Gopalakrishnan brings an understanding of the organization and its employees, having co-founded it. Lehman said the company had increased the age limit for the chairman's position from 65 to 70 for non-co-founders. However, for co-founders the age limit to remain chairman stands at 65. The company will also name three new directors by June 11.

The Amazing Resurrection Plant

What an amazing plant is the resurrection plant. In terms of adapting it has a heap to offer us.It's survived millions of years and it   is able to withstand very long periods indeed without water and then spring back to life when it finds moisture again .What a thing to be able to do !
The resurrection plant is the name given to two different species of plant, the first is Selaginella lepidophylla and the second is Anastatica hierochuntica. The first is native to the Chihuahuan Desert which runs across the U.S.-Mexico border. The second is found in many places including the Middle East and the Sahara Desert.
resurrection
The key feature of these plants is their ability to survive without water. They do so by curling up into a ball and "dying". These plants then revive themselves after coming into contact with more water. Selaginella which grows in desert and mountainous areas, may be cracked and dried out, but will turn green again and revive after rain. Where there is no moisture, as for example in dry soil or deserts the plant folds up its stems into a tight ball. This conserves any internal moisture. The plant’s metabolic functions are reduced to a bare minimum   and it looks like it is dead. It can actually stay this way for years. When it is like this the wind can easily transport it. With rain the resurrection plant takes in water and grows rapidly.

They seem to be able to do this because they contain trehalose. Trehalose is a disaccharide discovered in 1832. It allows plants and invertebrate animals to survive long periods without water because it has very high water retention capability. It is also an antioxidant and is used in food and cosmetics. It is also found in some insects such as grasshoppers, locusts, butterflies and bees, in which the blood-sugar is trehalose. The moisture retaining capacity of trehalose means that it is also used as a moisturizer in many basic toiletries. It is also used to protect organs for transplants. It can also be used to protect vaccines during distribution.
resurrection2
The resurrection plant is a primitive plant and it comes somewhere between mosses and ferns in plant evolution. It is what is known as a lycopod. They first appeared 400 million years ago as small plants. Between 345 and 280 million years ago they had a period of dominance when they grew as giant trees over thirty metres tall with trunks that were as much as two metres across. They contributed to the coal deposits we use today. These giant lycopods became extinct but the smaller relatives still exist today.

Green Movement Changes the Meaning of Earth Day | Use Celsias.com - reduce global °Celsius

April 22nd will mark the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day and with a new anniversary comes a new meaning for the day. Started in 1970, Earth Day was originally conceived as a day in which the people of the world could come together and educate themselves about the needs of the planet.

Earth day However, with the “Green” movement in full effect, Earth Day has gone from a day of environmental education to a day of environmental action. For this year’s festivities, a massive rally has been planned to take place in Washington that organizers are hoping will force Congress into signing a new and much needed climate bill.

Organizers have also set up The Earth Day Network to give information about the day itself and give awareness to green campaigns that need members and support. One of these green campaigns is A Walk For Water . This campaign will help raise funds to build permanent water resources in West Africa, which in the 110+ degree heat of the area, will both help save the water supply and countless lives of the impoverished West African communities.

The Earth Day Network has also crafted other grassroots campaigns to help save important environmental areas like forests and wetlands . However, not every green initiative is of the grassroots variety. The major conglomerate Siemens is getting in on the movement by running a green campaign called A Million Acts of Green that motivates customers to come up with green solutions for the upcoming Earth Day.

Many other major companies like Globetrotters Engineering Corporation (an architectural company founded by CEO, Niranjan Shah ) work every day to help the environment by designing energy efficient buildings and homes. This shows that the green movement is big enough even for companies like Siemens and Niranjan Shah’s Globetrotters Corporation.

Earth Day will celebrate its 40th anniversary, but in many ways this year’s celebration is somewhat of a rebirth. The day that was originally created to spread awareness and education of the planet’s problems has now become something more meaningful. It has now become a day in which the world works together to help and protect the Earth we all call home.

10 Secrets of Successful Entrepreneurs

How do you know whether you can be a successful entrepreneur, or if you are better off as a salaried employee? While there is no surefire formula for success, studies have shown that successful entrepreneurs share these ten characteristics. Check if you possess any one of them.

Running a one-person business is a creative, flexible and challenging way to become your own boss and chart your own future. It is about creating a life, as it is about making a living. It takes courage, determination and foresight to decide to become an entrepreneur. From the relatively safe cocoon of the corporate world, where paychecks arrive regularly, you will be venturing into the unchartered territories of business.

1. Think success.

To attain the kind of success that you want, you need to dream big. Every success story starts with big dreams. You need to have big dreams for yourself - which you want to be somebody rich, famous or fulfilled. You need to have a clear vision of what you want to achieve. But it doesn't stop in dreaming alone. You should actively visualize success in your mind that you can almost feel it, touch it or it is within your reach. Play this image back at every opportunity. What does it feel to triple your current income? How will your life change? What will your business look like if you achieved the million-dollar mark?
Successful entrepreneurs possess an attitude of openness and faith that you can have what you want if you can simply envision it as the first step on the path of action to acquiring it. Management gurus have taught us the power of visualization - seeing yourself in your mind as having accomplished your dreams. If you want to be a successful writer, envision yourself signing books for a throng of people who have lined up to have your autograph. If you want to be rich, picture yourself in luxurious surroundings holding a fat bank account. And the process of envisioning success for you should be a constant activity! You need to think that you are successful (or will be one) every single waking hour. A personal development coach shared me her secret to help her continuously visualize her goals for the moment: when climbing stairs, recite your goal with every step you take. So if you want more money, say "I will have money" in every step of the stairs. This technique will reinforce your goal and keep it fresh in your consciousness.

2. Be passionate with what you do.

You start a business to change any or all part of your life. To attain this change, you need to develop or uncover an intense, personal passion to change the way things are and to live life to the fullest. Success comes easily if you love what you do. Why? Because we are more relentless in our pursuit of goals about things that we love. If you hate your job right now, do you think you will ever be successful at it? Not in a million years! You may plod along, even become competent at the tasks, but you will never be a great success at it. You will achieve peak performance and do what you have to do to succeed only if you are doing something that interests you or something that you care about. Entrepreneurs who succeed do not mind the fact that they are putting in 15 or 18 hours a day to their business because they absolutely love what they do. Success in business is all about patience and hard work, which can only be attained if you are passionate and crazy with your tasks and activities.

3. Focus on your strengths.

Let's face it; you cannot be everything to everybody. Each of us has our own strengths and weaknesses. To be effective, you need to identify your strengths and concentrate on it. You will become more successful if you are able to channel your efforts to areas that you do best. In business, for example, if you know you have good marketing instincts, then harness this strength and make full use of it. Seek help or assistance in areas that you may be poor at, such as accounting or bookkeeping. To transform your weakness to strength, consider taking hands-on learning or formal training.

4. Never consider the possibility of failure.

Ayn Rand, in her novel The Fountainhead, wrote, "It is not in the nature of man - nor of any living entity, to start out by giving up." As an entrepreneur, you need to fully believe in your goals, and that you can do it. Think that what you are doing will contribute to the betterment of your environment and your personal self. You should have a strong faith in your idea, your capabilities and yourself. You must believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that you have the ability to recognize and fulfill them. The more you can develop faith in your ability to achieve your goals, the more rapidly you can attain it. However, your confidence should be balanced with calculated risks that you need to take to achieve greater rewards. Successful entrepreneurs are those who analyze and minimize risk in the pursuit of profit. As they always say, "no guts, no glory."

5. Plan accordingly.

You have a vision, and you have enough faith in yourself to believe that you can achieve your vision. But do you know how to get to your vision? To achieve your vision, you need to have concrete goals that will provide the stepping-stone towards your ultimate vision. Put your goals in writing; not doing so just makes them as intangible fantasies. You need to plan each day in such a way that your every action contributes to the attainment of your vision. Do you foresee yourself as the next Martha Stewart of hand-made home furnishings? Perhaps today, you need to see an artist to help you conceptualize the new line of hand-made linens that you hope to launch. Intense goal orientation is the characteristic of every successful entrepreneur. They have a vision, and they know how to get there. Your ability to set goals and make plans for your accomplishment is the skill required to succeed. Plan, plan and plan - because without which failure is guaranteed.

6. Work hard!

Every successful entrepreneur works hard, hard and hard. No one achieves success just by sitting and staring at the wall every single day. Brian Tracy puts it out this way, "You work eight hours per day for survival; everything over eight hours per day is for success." Ask any successful businessperson and they will tell you immediately that they had to work more than 60 hours per week at the start of their businesses. Be prepared to say goodbye to after-office drinks every day, or a regular weekend get-away trip. If you are in a start-up phase, you will have to breathe, eat and drink your business until it can stand on its own. Working hard will be easy if you have a vision, clear goals, and are passionate with what you do.

7. Constantly Look for Ways to Network.

In business, you are judged by the company you keep - from your management team, board of directors, and strategic partners. Businesses always need assistance, more so small businesses. Maybe the lady you met in a trade association meeting can help you secure funding, or the gentleman at a conference can provide you with management advise. It is important to form alliances with people who can help you, and whom you can help in return. To succeed in business, you need to possess good networking skills and always be alert to opportunities to expand your contacts.

8. Willingness to Learn.

You do not need to be a MBA degree holder or PhD graduate to succeed in your own business. In fact, there are a lot of entrepreneurs who did not even finish secondary education. Studies show that most self-made millionaires have average intelligence. Nonetheless, these people reached their full potentials achieved their financial and personal goals in business because they are willing to learn. To succeed, you must be willing to ask questions, remain curious, interested and open to new knowledge. This willingness to learn becomes more crucial given the rapid changes in technologies and ways of doing business.

9. Persevere and have faith.

No one said that the road to success is easy. Despite your good intentions and hard work, sometimes you will fail. Some successful entrepreneurs suffered setbacks and resounding defeats, even bankruptcy, yet managed to quickly stand up to make it big in their fields. Your courage to persist in the face of adversity and ability to bounce back after a temporary disappointment will assure your success. You must learn to pick yourself up and start all over again. Your persistence is the measure of the belief in yourself. Remember, if you persevere, nothing can stop you.

10. Discipline yourself.

Thomas Huxley once said, "Do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you like it or not." Self-discipline is the key to success. The strength of will to force yourself to pay the price of success - doing what others don't like to do, going the extra mile, fighting and winning the lonely battle with yourself.
